Ruffles!

Hi folks, Deborah here this time 'round. I've taken a spin about ruffles this weekend! Organza grunge ruffled flowers, to be precise.

To get started, I picked out three delightful colours of organza...aren't these delicious!?

Then I cut a wee scrap of cardstock with one of the old Cuttlebug flowers dies, scanned it, enlarged it, and printed it to 4" square to use as a template to cut my floral shapes.

Folding your fabric in four layers, one colour at a time, pin and cut. You don't need to be precise at all, because the next steps will fix any errors in cutting...or at least make it look like the errors really don't matter at all (lol)

Cut till you have a nice stack, as you'll need four to five layers per flower.

Now here's the fun part! Light a candle, and start gently waving your organza over the flame. Be careful! Don't go too close!

The fabric melts quickly, and will reward you with the most delightful grungy edges!

Now all you need to do is to stack the layers one atop the other, stitch them together, add a brad or a button or a ribbon, and voila! Grunge flowers!

Now all you need to do is decide how you'll use them! There are all sorts of possibilities...here are two, just to get you started...a very simple card, and a gift wrapped box.

If you decide to play a little, we'd love to see what you create! Please stop by my blog to say hi too...more goodies there. ;)

Announcing A Wedding Affaire Event

Save The Date
We are thrilled to announce a week long event filled with inspirational wedding ideas, plans, and unlimited inspiration. In the divine tradition of Cuttlebug Challenge, we are taking the notion of DIY to a level of beauty and complete coordination rarely encountered on a blog.
I'm Shantaie Fowler, senior designer for Cuttlebug Challenge, and it is my honor to present this stunning line of patterned papers named appropriately enough, Mr. and Mrs., from our sponsor, the gorgeous Teresa Collins. Our wedding colors are a luxurious mix of black, pink, and butter. Core'dinations color core paper lends itself to work in perfect harmony with embossing and die cutting, and as always, we will feature their superior quality card stock in our samples. Each designer will create essential as well as decorative items for this memorable event. Kindly Save the Dates to your calendar, and join us each and every day to plan the wedding of a lifetime!

This flourish butterfly was cut on my Cricut using Give A Hoot cartridge and was cut at 1 1/2 on Core'dinations card stock. Tiny pearls for the body, and bitty floral stems were fashioned into antenna.
My shaped layer was cut with Straight From The Nest shadow layer at 5 inches, and embossed with the Textile Cuttlebug folder.

For a perfect match the official wedding affair nail colors are "Go for the Gold" and "Champagne Pink" from Revlon. Every girl in the wedding party will be delighted to a treat of coordinating tips and toes.
Thank you so much for visiting us today, we want to hear what you think.
Are you planning a wedding? Tell us what you are doing for your event, and how we can help.

ASK TAMMY - May 2010

Photobucket

Good Morning Everyone!!

Welcome to the Cuttlebug Challenge blog!  We are so happy that you have stopped by!  Today is the second 'session' of ASK TAMMY gypsy questions.  I will be answering the first 20 questions about the gypsy today!  If you weren't with us last month, click HERE  to see that question/answer session, there were some really awesome questions!

Wow... here we are on the brink of summer vacation!  Love it!  Many of you are getting those gypsies ready for that family trip or maybe it's a Memorial Day weekend at the cabin by the lake?  Wherever you are planning on going, isn't it great that you can take your Gypsy along with you!

I'm excited today because PROVOCRAFT is planning on releasing a new update for the Gypsy!!  WOOT WOOT!

AND we are giving away a GYPSY tonight at midnight EST!!  All you have to do is make sure you are a CUTTLEBUG CHALLENGE follower (easy peasy!) and leave a comment!   I'm also giving away GYPSY A-Z DVDs over on my blog ( http://www.cricutcritters.com/ ) today while we wait for the update to be released!!

So... now for those questions!!  Who will be first?

1) Abby said...
Good morning!! My question is this:
Are there any problems with the Gypsy that is making our Cricut E not work properly? My E is not reading any carts. Ever since I got my Gypsy I never had the need to insert a cart. Couple days ago I tried one and nothing!!! Does not read ANY!!!

Oh no Abby!  This is a first for me to hear... I would definitely recommend that you call PROVOCRAFT technical support at 801-932-1144 and let them help you troubleshoot.  There is a 'Cricut Reset' procedure that you can try first that might fix the problem:

- Turn the cricut machine on (with no cartridge installed and not hooked up to Gypsy or DS)
- Turn each dial (there are 3 of them) 3 times each going from the highest to the lowest each time
- Take the blade housing and gently pull it to the left side of the machine
- On the inner wall of the machine where the blade housing sits is a red button.  Push and hold it for 3-5 seconds  (how many people are going to go look for this button now? lol)
- Turn your cricut off for approximately 30 minutes

That should reset it... see if that works.  If not, definitely call PC!

2) IRW Dana said...
Tammy, LOVE YOU!! Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge concerning the Gypsy. In little ol' Iowa there's not to many Gypsy users around so I get all my info from you. I actually have 2 questions and they both pertain to cutting images from your Gypsy.
-Where do you put your image on the Gypsy mat so it will cut it in the top right corner like the Cricut does? My gypsy seems to have a mind of its own and your never sure where it's going to start cutting.
-I"ve seen youtube videos where people cut several things from the Gypsy at the same time in different colors. How do you line those up on the Gypsy and your cutting mat so you know for sure your cutting the right image on the right color paper.
Thanks again for your inspiration.

Awww... thank YOU Dana!  You are so sweet!  The answer to your first question is place the image on the top left corner to get it to cut on the top right corner of the mat.  A good way to understand even better is to look at the virtual mat on your gypsy... note the arrow that represents how the mat will be loaded into the cricut machine and when placing your paper on your mat.... make sure you are looking at the mat the same way... with the arrow pointing to the left.  This applies to your second question also.  Each square on the virtual mat represents the squares on the actual mat... simply count the squares around your image so that you know exactly where to place your paper on the mat!  No more wasting paper!

3) Sylvia said...
I hope this is where we ask the questions. My question is, do you think provocraft will update gypsy in the future to be able to store and read svg files that are either downloaded from internet or created by gypsy users? I would love to be able to use fonts off the internet with the gypsy as well.

I have two answers for you... the 'unofficial' answer is:  Sorry Sylvia, I really do not see this happening.  The gypsy was designed to support the Provocraft cricut products which includes all the thousands of shapes & fonts that Provocraft has provided.  Now this is my own personal opinion, but that would be like going into a restaurant and saying I want to use your plates & silverware and I'll buy your drink, but I got free food (fonts) from the restaurant next door, so I'm gonna use your dinnerware to eat it.  Don't know if that is a clear analogy (it is in my head, but that is scary by itself! lol!) and I KNOW that there are alot of people out there who disagree with me, but that is MHO!

Now, the 'official' answer is:  I am unaware of any plans to allow third party images on your gypsy device. ;-)

Hi Tammy,
You are awesome. This Ask Tammy forum is so helpful. My question is regarding some gypsy files I have uploaded from Cindy's blog. Some work and others don't.When I click on the file in my gypsy to cut it,it returns to the welcome screen.Do you know why? Is there something I can do in order to get the files to cut? It doesn't happen with all files, only certain ones. I don't have DS and these are gypsy cut files. Any help you can give would be great.

Thanks Kerry!  Wow... that Cindy is awesome! The first thing to come to mind might be that there are both gypsy and ds files there, but you said that they were definitely gypsy files.  The other thing I would check for is to make sure that you 'own' all the cartridges that were used in her design.  If the design contains images from more than one cartridge, you will still need to have all those cartridges linked in your gypsy.  Check that and then let me know if that helped!

How do you upload files to the gypsy?

When you connect your gypsy to your computer/laptop, click on your GYPSY SYNC software (should be a gypsy icon on your desktop).  It will check for any available updates automatically.  If there are updates available, it will prompt you to do so.  It will also prompt you to 'back up' your files and you can upload all your gypsy files at that time.  If you have already updated and you just want to upload some files, then a box will come up that will have two options at the bottom... (1) UPLOAD FILES TO GYPSY and (2) SAVE SELECTED FILES TO PC.  This is how you (1) download files into your gypsy and (2) save files from your gypsy to your computer.

Hi Tammy, I LOVE my Gypsy and use it often to design my scrapbook pages and to cut the images I'm using on those pages. My question: I've seen Gypsy users posting about using multiple pages or mats for a project and having the ability to "see" them at the same time...how do you do this? Thanks for your help!

Good question!  When you first receive your gypsy brand new... you will need to register it (GYPSY REGISTER HERE), download the GYPSY SYNC software and update your gypsy.  The MULTIPLE PAGES were added onto the gypsy after it's release.  Once you have done that you will notice a little "+" sign in the top left corner of your virtual cutting mat screen... tap that with your stylus and it will add another page to your project.  There are plans for further enhancing this feature, but not sure as to when that will happen.

I am a follower and I love all the Gypsy advice!
One question: My Gypsy seems to star cutting anywhere, but it is cutting my images on the right colors of paper. Can you tell me why it's cutting all over the place instead of what I would think would be in order? For example, it might start with an image in the bottom left, then the top right, then the bottom right, then the middle, and last top left-instead everything on the right, then the middle, then the left? It's not a problem, just doesn't make real sense to me.

Interesting isn't it? I always find it odd to see what gets cut first. I used to think that it had something to do with the order in which you add the image to your cutting mat, but it has more to do with the order in which the gypsy 'reads' the cut files that have been used for that project.

First I want to thank you for the opportunity to win a Gypsy.
Second, is there any chance that Provocraft plans to make a second version of the Gypsy that has a larger screen (like maybe 8inch square) for us older gals that have difficulty with the small things? Or possibly people that arn't older but have visual difficulties?

At this point, I am unaware of any plans for a second edition to the Gypsy.  Now we were told that there would be up to 5 new 'machines' released by Provocraft over the next couple of years.  The CRICUT CAKE was the first and there is rumor that something 'cool' and 'new' is being released at CHA this July... but I honestly don't know what it is.... yet.  :-)

I always seem to go back to DS when I work with my Gypsy. Would you believe I've only synched 2 carts because I don't want to have them all synched and then regret it. Yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and I made a file, synched my cart, and tried to cut it with my gypsy. It had 2 pages of files and it cut them altogether. Ugh! What happened? I ended up making separate files and finally getting it cut but it took me all morning.
All that and I would still love to win a gypsy for my scrapping buddy. LOL she works full time and this would be great for her to design on breaks.
Thanks Tammy. I know you'll have an answer for me
Tina

Tina!  I'm so sorry that you and your gypsy have not bonded yet!!  Do me a favor and check to see what build you are on (chose the wrench icon to go to your settings and it will be in the very bottom left corner).  We had an update a few months ago that was dumping everything on multiple pages all onto one page when cutting... arrrgggh!  Thankfully, they came out with an update right after that fixed that.  So, if I were a 'gambling girl'... I'd bet that you need to update to fix that problem!  Let me know if that is it or not, okay?

10) chignon said...
Tammy, thanks for all you do! I love your blog...so much fun :o) My question is...why does my gypsy add an image to the "address bar" when I haven't tapped on the keypad when I am looking at a cart's keypad? It's like it is possessed! And it puts multiple images in the "address bar"

Thanks Chignon!  How long has it been since you calibrated your gypsy?  As a rule, I try to do it everytime I update and was just reminded to do it this week.  I was having issues moving things around with my stylus and sure enough... after calibrating the issues went away!  Also make sure that you are not holding your gypsy in your left hand with your thumb on the edge of the screen (does that make sense?).  I teach classes and I get students who add tons of mulitple pages to their projects and they don't know why... it's because they are squeezing the gypsy in their left hands and that thumb sometimes hits the top left corner where the plus sign is and viola!... multiple pages!  lol  I don't think that is what you are doing, but would be something to check.

This is great!. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge with us.
My question:  When you are searching for an image, you type the image in, then click ok, then nothing happens. What does that mean? Try typing in scallop frame or scalloped frame, nothing. I know that there are cartridges with scallops on them. Any advice? Thanks for your help.

Your welcome Elsie!  This is a good question!  One of the things I love most about my gypsy is the awesome SEARCH feature!  I have over 100 cartridges, I know that MINI MONOGRAMS is the cartridge that I go to for my scallop circles and squares, but I couldn't tell you ALL the cartridge with scalloped shapes without searching.  So... the key to effective searching is using the right 'keyword'.  In order to find the scalloped circle on MM, I believe the keyword is CIRCLE SCALLOP... you will get different results if you search for CIRCLE SCALLOPED.  Just adding the 'ed' changes your results and gives you STRAIGHT FROM THE NEST scallops.  There is an alphabetical keyword list that you can scroll down and chose the letter 'S' to see what words start with 'SCALLOP'.  That is helpful and I know that this feature will have some future enhancements to improve the process for us.

Is this where I ask? Hope so..
If you created a design on your Gypsy and want to share it. How do you do that??? Please start from the beginning....
I LOVE this Q & A time!!!!VERY HELPFUL!!

Hi Cricaholic! (luv ur name!)  Okay... first you want to upload the file from your gypsy to your computer (see question #5 above).  Once the file is on your computer it is much like a photo or word document.  You can email it, or put it on a flashdrive or burn to a cd or even sign up for www.4Shared.com and put it on your blog/website to share with anyone who wants it.

Hi Tammy and thanks for answering questions. I use the round buttons that increase and decrease and the arrow buttons to move my image quite a lot. I would like to know why when I am moving items to the right with the arrows it decreases my image... I am anxiouosly waiting for the update. It would be great to win a gypsy.

Hi BJ!  Sounds to me like you may need to calibrate your stylus.  Go to your settings page (click on the wrench icon) and you will see how to calibrate again.  That should take care of the problem.

Hi Tammy! I love your work, and have been following your blogs/work since last summer, when I first got my E...but I digress.
I've only had my Gypsy for a couple of weeks, and every so often, it goes a little goofy and puts 2 or 3 cursors on the mat, they blink like crazy, and I have to close the project to get it back to normal. Is that just a harmless software glitch, or is it a sign of big trouble?

Thanks Kim! I find that the Gypsy will give me extra cursors and show the dreaded yellow lines when I am tapping my stylus either too fast or too much. Especially if I have welded projects on the mat. You have to be patient with the Gypsy... she needs time to process some of the images. If you rush her, she will respond with extra cursors. To get rid of the extra cursors either tap the preview (eye icon) or the cut page and exit back to the mat and the extra cursors will be gone.

Tammy - I have 2 questions for you...
Do you know if there are any plans to add a speed feature tot he gypsy? My gypsy cuts really fast and sometimes that messes up my more detailed cuts. Other then a speed feature or making the cuts bigger then I want them is there a way to help cut the detailed images at the smaller sizes 2-4 inches (for cards)?

Hello!  I am really not sure if a speed controller is on the 'to-do' list for a gypsy update, but I hope it is!  Good news and bad news... the bad news is that there are just some images that were not designed to be cut small.  Now, with that being said... as each of the new cartridges come out, I have discovered that the detailed cuts have improved.  The new WALL DECOR & MORE has borders and phrases that were intended for the wall, yet they cut so well even at small sizes for cards.  The other thing to watch is the type of paper you use.  Everyone has their preference and I definitely have mine, but stay away from papers or cardstocks that are fiberous... they will tend to tear easier, especially on delicate cuts.

16) Elisa said...
Tammy I love you! Thanks for all the advice! I have two questions, when I turn on my gyspy sometimes it turns off within 3 seconds and its fully charged. Also sometimes when I am designing with my gyspy my images turn yellow and I cant grab them. Is there something wrong with my gyspy? Thanks so much!

Awww... Thx Elisa! First answer, your screensaver timeout settings might be too low. The gypsy comes with them set at like 1 minute and your screen will go blank after 1 minute of no activity. It will look like it just turned off. My settings are set at 15 minutes, but you can set them at 1min/5min/10min/15min/30min/1hr/2hrs or NEVER. If it is not your screensaver, then make sure you are getting a good connection with the charger in your gypsy. They charger does not go all the way into the gypsy and don't force it, but it should be snug and will not fall out. It that does not seem to be the problem... I would definitely call Provocraft Dupport at 801-932-1144. As for the yellow lines, see question # 14 above. Hope that helps!

17) jenblue said...
Hi Tammy, I just got my gypsy a few days ago and am loving it! I don't know if you'll get to my question or not, but I was wondering if there was a way you can weld your letters or objects together then shadow them automatically or do you have to do it manually? Any tricks you have? Thanks for all the information you have given so far!

Hi Jenblue! I'm so happy that you are loving you gypsy! It is by far my most favorite tool in my studio! Sorry to report that there is no 'shortcut' or 'automatic' feature for the shadowing. Personally, if I a shadow feature is avaiable for something, I always weld it first, then line the word/name up on top of the shadow before moving it down to weld. If a shadow is not available, I cheat and just use basic shapes to shadow behind my word/name.

18) Katherine said...
Tammy, have been following your blog for a while and agree with all who have posted "you are great"!! My question: When I do a search (say butterfly) and get the list, I choose one to look at bigger. If I don't want to use that one, I have to click out and then on the word again and wait while is goes all through the search again. Is there a way to just go directly back to the list, like a back button on a computer and not have all that wait time? Thanks.

Thx Katherine!  I recognize you as one of my regular followers and I appreciate all your comments!  Ahhh... the dreaded butterfly search!!!  It takes awhile to find them all because there are so many!  There is an easier way... when the search list pops up with all your butterflies and the names of the cartridges right beside them... HOLD THE TOP LEFT SILVER BUTTON down with your thumb and tap on the butterfly with your stylus.  It will give you a ZOOM preview.  Tap the top button again or tap the screen and it will automatically go back to your search list.  You can also use those two silver buttons (on the left side of the screen) to scroll through the search list more precisely.  That will save you TONS of time!

19) Gemini-Heather said...
do you know if there is going to be an easier way to delete a page from a multiple page file while it is still open? Like maybe delete page button. Also, the reason i am looking for a specific button is because sometimes I lose images off the side of my page and am unable to delete it and then the page will never delete even when I restart because the lost image is still there. I hope this made sense.I love your blog and all your talent!! I have been a follower of yours and cuttlebugchallenge for a long time.

Sorry Heather! But there is not a delete button for the pages yet.  The only way to delete a page is to save and then reopen, but you are right, if there are images lost in never-neverland... that page is not going to delete.  I've done this many times myself and I've had to force myself to position the cursor 'on' the mat BEFORE I select images from the overlays.  I'm not saying that it doesn't occasionally happen, but definitely helped me to develop a good habit of design.

Thanks for doing this! I have been watching the A-Z Gypsy DVD. At first I wasn't impressed but I didn't realize it had all the sub menus!!! It's awesome! I have learned so much and I consider myself an advanced G girl. :) I was curious though why you didn't really show the 'shadow' feature in action. You talked about it on one project but didn't show how to do this. Is it because it is coming on the new update? Thx BTW for all you do. Tell Megan too! I'm also FeelnCroppy on the MB.

Thx Cecilia! Megan and I both appreciate it so much!  You know we put alot of time & effort into that DVD and even though it is 3.5 hours long and full of stuff... we could have very easily made it much much longer.  That 3.5 hours was condensed from like 3 days of filming!  Anyone who works in the film industry knows that sometimes cuts have to be made :-(... but, hey!  That just means we might have to make a Gypsy A-Z, part 2!  LOL!

Hello everyone! I'm so excited to be doing my first tutorial for you!

For this week's theme of Embroidery, I thought it would be fun to make a gift box with little note cards inside. I started off with a yellow prism gift box. I choose my colors to match. The pattern I chose to use I got from Darsie Bruno. You can find lots of fun patterns on her website,
A Stitcher's Dream. First, size your pattern to fit your project with your favorite photo editing program. Print out the pattern on regular copy paper. Lay your pattern over your heavy card stock. The side your finished project right side up. You start punching little holes in each place marked. (I use a needle that I glued a wooden bead to the end) When this is completed carefully remove your pattern. You're ready to start embroidering. You'll want to use a long bead needle to embroider with.

If your pattern calls for 1-3 stitch, that means you will be sewing between 3 holes. For example you'll bring the thread up at hole # 1, down in hole #3, up in hole #4, back down in hole #2, back up in hole #3 back down in hole #5, back up in hole #6, back down in hole Continue on this way throughout your pattern.

Tape the beginning and end of your thread on the back. Do not tie knots.
The easiest way I finally understood this, is remember the old string art, how you wrapped the thread around the nails. It's on the same premise.
When you are done with all of the stitching, turn your work over and use a ball tool or a scooped tool to rub over the back to "heal" the holes.

I got this beautiful medallion from Fred She Said. You can get your free medallion here. Make sure you leave her some love for it! I used purple and yellow stickles on each layer. When the layers are dry use pop dots to assemble.
Tape Card stock to box and adhere medallion.
To finish off the top of the box I used Stickles to highlight and give some sparkle!

For the note cards inside I cut the Basil card stock to 3 1/2" and ran it though the Cuttlebug with the Birds and Swills folder. I then cut white card stock to 3 1/4" and used the MS all around border punch. To finish off, I used the center of the medallion to add a little touch of a flower on the note card.
Materials Used:
A2 Birds and Swirls Emboss Folder #37-1609
Basil Card Stock
Purple Metallic Thread
Yellow Stickles
Purple
Stickles
Yellow Prism Gift Box
White Card Stock
Tear-
ific Tape
I hope this inspires you to give embroidering a try.

Happy Father's Day with the Sweet Treat Team!

Hi Everyone,

Diane's  fabulous Wordbook..

Father's Day will be here before you know it - so it's time to get started on some cards and gifts!  I used Design Studio to create this card and word book (the bookmarks are suitable for a young child to make - super simple).

The "DAD" wordbook was designed using the Base Camp Cricut cartridge.  Instead of chipboard for the page bases I used a surprise ingredient...The papers are by DCWV - the Natural Stack.

The card is made to coordinate with the book with metallic papers and "Rivets" to hold it together.

For all of the details about these projects and to download the free .cut files, please visit my blog Capadia Designs.

Beth Ullman created the Ultimate tool box

Today we are celebrating Dad here at Sweet Treat Thursday, and I am here to share my Father's Day art.  First, I made a tool belt that I borrowed from sweet Mel's blog, then I played around with my Cricut to create this scene card.   I know that is what my hubby would like to be doing on Fathers Day!

Close-up of my card ~ the scene is done using the Camp Out cartridge from Provo Craft, and the tag from George and Basic Shapes.

Here is my tool belt.  I also used the Camp Out cartridge for the deer head, and a couple of cuttlebug folders.  For more details on my project, be sure and stop by my blog at Nana's Memories & More.

We have one more Awesome tutorial for you, from Carla!

Back to Basics for Fathers  Day!

Good Morning ladies! Carla here  to show  you a super cute Father's Day Card & Coupon Tag book you can make  for that  special man in your life using 3 cartridges that I think most of us have  in our  cartridge collection!
  1. Mini Monograms
  2. All Mixed Up

For the card I cut my layers of  pp from  Mini Monograms, and my #1 font from All Mixed up. You can find stars on a  number  of Cricut Catridges! The circles were cut from Mini Monograms.

The tag album was cut from Mini   Monograms. I cut out 6 tags, cut the layered circle and then adhered a  bunch of  stars on, leaving room for special handwritten "coupons"!

I hope this gives you some  ideas for your  Father's Day gift!! :) Please feel free to hop on over to my blog for  more  information and to say hi! www.moralia.wordpress.com

Okieladybug amazing fishing set for dad!

For this week's theme of Father's Day, I tried to think of something that  Dad love to go fishing. One of my fondest vacation memories is of us going to Lake Eufaula here in Oklahoma, and him setting out lines at night and checking them in the morning. So with that memory I chose to do a fishing theme for my Father's Day project.

My father would have enjoyed. He did ! I made a square card using Just Because Cartridges from Provo Craft, Base Camp and Wild Cards. I even tried out my new Janome Sew-Mini to do some stitching. I am really loving that little machine!

For the giftcard box I used Tags, Bags Boxes and More cartridge. I cut a fish from the patterned paper and layered it over another one I cut and pop dotted. I used a small spinner as an embellishment. I did remove the hook to avoid injury.

Be sure to check out my blog at Okieladybug's Scrap N' More for more details and pictures.
I hope everyone enjoy's their Father's Day this year!
